Morris Rugby Old Boys Spring 2002 Schedule
Contact John Sutherland or Craig Chapman if you need to contact the Old Boys.Morris Old Boys v OMEX RFC 6/1/2002 @ Jersey Cup FinalWon 21-20Tries: Conversions: Penalties: The foot of Dr. Rich Corney and the outstanding forward play of Mike Smith, AKA Game Guy carried the day for the OB's. We fought our way into the OMEX match after they scored first and converted. Webb touched one down but we didn't convert. Ted Hynes scored from a rolling maul which Rich Corney converted to put us ahead early in the 2nd half. Rich followed this up by punishing OMEX's indiscipline by kicking two penalties. We could have had an even bigger lead as Andy Steinberg picked up a loose ball in the second half and put his head down and charged into the try zone......he busted through three attempted tackles but unfortunately as he dove, he dove out of the try zone. This mistake could have proved costly as OMEX came roaring back into the game with a converted try late in the second half to put them up 20-18. As the final whistle beckoned Game Guy made a crunching tackle on an OMEX forward who would not release the ball resulting in a penalty from a very missable angle. The captains were informed time would run out after the next breakdown, so it was decided to let Rich take the kick. Everyone held their breath, Rich Corney held his nerve and as the sailed over to make it 21-20 to Morris, the thronged masses on the sidelines went into hysteria. An historic win by Morris against an OMEX team that had not lost for 6 years prior to this according to their captain. Morris takes Jersey Cup! Morris takes Jersey Cup! Morris Old Boys v Union B 6/1/2002 @ Jersey CupLost 19-17Tries: Conversions: Penalties: The match against the Union B side showed that we were slightly sun stroked and that playing young B sides with speedy backs is not a recipe for OB's success. We brought Omar Rivera out of retirement for the second half, the forwards showed some life in the rucks and mauls and Game Guy scooped up some well left balls and scampered in for two tries that Rich converted but we came up short 19-17. All in all it was a great OB's season where we beat the other OB's sides we played and actually held our own in the B and C side matches we played. We have 24 or so dues paying members and a much bigger pool of talent to call on for games. From here on in we will try to schedule ONLY OB's sides and we will space out the matches so we aren't playing two weeks in a row. Morris Old Boys @ Monmouth RFC 5/4/2002Won 48-12Tries: Cons: Well, the rugby gods smiled on The Morris OB'S Saturday,(at least the ones that showed up). The sun was shining, the pitch at Thompson Park was greener then Dublin on St. Patty's Day and with the help of B side backs Steve Kessel, Kevin "three try" Laughlin and Cal "I should be an old boy" O'Herlihy we beat our gracious hosts 42 to 12. Playing against players our own age is much preferred, (also Mitch, Toma, Ronnie and I would prefer not to have to play a full B game), with Jim Leslie, Mike Stumpf John Harvey and Ronnie all running like elks in the springtime and Mike Iandolo pulling down line out ball at will we created space for Kevin, Rich, Jim and John to score. Ed Joyce started for Peter Glanvill who was possesed by a demon hamstring injury from his time in the B game also scored in the first half. We had the wind in the second half we which we took advantage of with both Mitch and then Doc Rich at fly keeping the ball deep. Our defense was good, the forwards never stopped and it allowed Kevin and yours truly to touch a couple more down in the second half. Rich converted on 4 of the kicks. A few of us,(very few as it turned out), continued to savor the afternoon over at The Wild Rover. It of course is Monmouth's clubhouse.....the beer was great.....the singer was cool and the venison and elk they cooked filled the belly. It is a shame only 5 of us,(six if you count the one Men's club member who was there), were around to round out the day. Monmouth did ask us if anyone would be interested in rounding out their OB's side at a tournament on Long Island next weekend, let me know I'll give you a contact.
