Jersey Cup Winners 2002Morris Rugby Old Boys Fall 2003 Schedule
Previous Seasons:
Spring 2003 10/18/2003 - Morris Old Boys @ Village LionsMorris OB's rag tag side goes down in glorious defeatMorris took the pitch after an agonizing almost hour long drive around Randall and Wards Island for The Village Lions Friends and Family Day Rugby Outing at just about 12 noon. Although we traveled FAIRLY well with 14 players we had a very light and somewhat fitness challenged pack and a sewn together backline that didn't click all game long. The very small pitch should have afforded us a chance to go toe to toe with the Lions pack but we didn't always control our own head and we got beat around the breakdowns mainly on the blind side. Their pack scored the first two tries I believe and the wings the other two....they converted two tries and their flyhalf also had a drop goal. Our score was cobbled together in a most unusual way as first time scrum half Peter Engel got the ball out to me at fly and I passed out to Kevin Murrell who had agreed to play with us....he kicked forward and was able to retrieve his kick as the ball came back to him....a nice pass to Jack No Hair took it further up the pitch into contact where the always reliable Game Guy was able to strip the ball away and make a break inside the 22 metre line where yours truly was screaming for a pass just off to his left,(with nothing but the try line in front of me)....all of a sudden Gamer launches what looked like a one handed skip pass right by me to a rumbling Uncle Tom who was 5 or 6 metres to MY left, Uncle Tom lunged forward and caught the pass, kept his balance and scored our lone try with about ten minutes to go in the second half....it brought a smile to all of our frustrated faces. However, it was a great sunny day along the east river with lots of Morris Rugby and Village Lions kids out to watch their parents.....the Lions put out a great spread of food and drink which seemed to taste better watching our A side pull out a wonderful 9-7 victory.....thrilling match to watch boys - well done!! 09/13/2003 - Morris Old Boys @ CT GreysMorris OB's go down 20-17 in a penalty ridden game. The Morris Old Boys traveled up to Wallingford Connecticut on a rainy Saturday September 13th for a 1:00pm match against what I would say are our new rivals. With two late Friday additions to the backline and an Stumpf brother from Norwalk CT Morris traveled with 18 players and took on The Greys. Compared to last fall's away match this Morris team came out stronger in all aspects of play, scrummaging, line outs and backline defense especially. Alex Ciaraffo and Mitch Miller led the loose play with great support from our now invaluable flankers Game Guy and Tex. We excelled in all aspects of Old Boy rugby except rucking.....whether they were good calls or bad the ref blew his whistle repeatedly regarding hands in or laying on the ball or not staying on our feet. These calls,(and our insistence about arguing them on the pitch), led to a try that shouldn't have happened and a straight on chip kick for the Grey's kicker who was spot on. Back to our strengths though.....our three trys came off of great breaks by our backline of Miller, Feury and Jack "no hair" with support from the loose forwards and wings. Two trys were put in by Game Guy and one by Young Steve Young....Miller converted one....giving us the final score of 20-17 to Connecticut. The usual bocce and beer was available after the match as well as a fine spread down at their local bar.....the revelry went on back in NJ as Andy Steinberg had some of the lads and the ladies that love us over to his pad! Over all great day for the OB's |
