Morris Masters is under new Management, a picture of our illustrious new Leadership Team is shown above so that you can buy them a beer in the futile hope of getting selected. All forms of bribery are encouraged. If you were wondering why Morris Masters is under new Management, last year's Management is pictured below. Doesn't take a genius to figure out, does it?

Morris Masters vs Connecticut Greys 4/17/2004

Won 18-14

The Masters won their opening match against Connecticut 18 to 14. The first try was scored minutes into the opening first half by Tony Jones exploding from 40+ meters. The second try was also scored in the first half by Andy Steinberg, cleaning up on a 10 meter lineout to Chapman, and driving in with the pack on a rolling maul. (Wish we had a camera as Andy’s face was a strange mix of joy and pain – Joy for the score, pain because at least 1000lbs of front-row manhood was lying on top of him). The final Morris try, second half, was scored by the eight-man, Jack Harvey, on a five meter scrum, weak side. Tom Fuery did an excellent containing their flanker on that push. No conversions were made with one penalty kick (Jones) for a total of eighteen.

Connecticut scored both their tries in the third half and made the accompanying conversions.

It was an excellent match with over 25 active Morris Masters participating for at least one 20 minute half. Both Tex and Game Guy were named “men of the match” and will be the official captains for Saturday’s upcoming game with Union . Andy was presented a pin by Connecticut for scoring a “pack based try” and proving that your never too old or grey to push it over (with a little help from your friends).

Omar was warned against 1980 style pop-kicking and actually behaved himself. Fatman and Murdock came out of retirement for spectacular debuts in the late periods. It was also great to see Tom Joyce and Steve Brewer (who was knocking hard at Connecticut ’s door but couldn’t get in). Toma dropped the Jersey ’s off and then had to leave because he “had stuff to do”. He is currently the frontrunner for the “Golden Shorts” award.

Tony Jones took care of the barbecue for us with his catering company “Now We’re Cooking". It was outstanding and if any of you have an event coming up I highly recommend checking Tony out. This is not to say we don’t owe you a family day and we will keep you posted as we progress.

The Connecticut write up about the match is below. Well Done Masters!

MORRIS TAKES IT TO GREY

April 17, Morristown, N.J. - The Grey fell to one and one on the spring season as a result of a loss to the Morris RFC Old Boys. A late rally by the Grey fell short, with the final score 14 - 18. The Grey really didn't get into their stride until the second 25-minute period and a third-period burst was too little too late.

Bill Bishop and Jay Chabot did a great job hooking up, getting to know each other's moves and really complementing one another. Lou Casciaro played a fine game at Number 8, making himself available around the field. These three players shared Men-of-the-Match honors. The play of Jim Burke, Bill Aman, and Jim McCormick also stood out.

Morris Masters vs Union 5/1/2004

Tie 13-13

(Editors Note - Please note I am CONVINCED we scored another try and WON this game)

A twenty year rivalry is still going strong between the Union and Morris masters, with the tie game being called early - mid-way into the 3rd,  twenty minute period. The play was as aggressive as ever between the two teams, bringing back memories of the Division Championships and Jersey Cups of the late eighties. Union came out strong, scoring early in the first and seemingly catching Morris off guard. The Masters showed their grit, however, rallying quickly on the attack and forcing Union mistakes. As a result, Tony Jones was able to capitalize on two penalties leaving Morris a point behind at the whistle.

During the second period, Morris pulled ahead when Craig Levine (from hook) scored on the second phase, leaving Jones with an easy conversion for a total of 13. Union answered with a Morris penalty resulting in the 6 point lead being cut to 3. The hard play continued, with the Morris attack resulting in some excellent rucking, mauling and scrumming in the Union end. Union refused to crack under the pressure, however, and seemed to catch a lucky break with a late try being called back for an ever so slight, forward pass.

As the minutes waned in the last period, play became more frenzied. Tempers flared and play inside the rucks and mauls grew more aggressive. A Morris penalty resulted in a tied game and the intense play became even more heated. A blatant stomp by Union (on their advantage) resulted in Morris rushing to their man’s defense and strong words flying between the two teams. Both sides refusing to yield to the referee’s whistle ended the match at 13 all.

CLEAR YOUR CALENDARS BOYS as it seems that this year’s Jersey Cup will have to settle the matter of the better team.

Man of the Match was a close competition between Alex and Tony. In the end, because of all the rucking and mauling, it went to the scrumhalf. Both Masters played an excellent game and had a huge impact on play. Congratulations to both of them for an exceptional game.

Thanks to Tex and Gamer for their captaincy and leadership. Thrust upon them unawares, they did an excellent job. A special thanks to John Sutherland for stepping in and calling a very difficult game. Knowing John’s style of play, it was a match he would have loved to have been in. We owe you again, Toe! And I, for one, will make sure your glass is never empty on the next World Cup tour.

Morris Masters @ Village Lions 5/15/2004

Won 18-14

Morris Masters Go Undefeated into Jersey Cup

When the 19 members of the Morris Masters finally braved the traffic on the Cross Bronx and arrived at Randles Island we were all met with Bad News.  In order to ensure that his close friend and mentor, did not have a lock on the "GOLDEN SHORTS award ", Mitch "Pinky Toe" Miller withdrew from the lineup when he dropped the jerseys at Chapman's and said with a tear in his eye, he was not coming to the game.  He was overheard saying as he pulled away, Toma made me do it..

This did not deter our captain Alex from putting together a strong line up for the first of 3 halves. He actually had plenty of time to come up with a line up and game plan, opening remarks, closing remarks etc... on his several trips across the bridge.

Once the game started we played solid defense with everyone getting around the field.  Due to the superior effort of the 18 other members of the team we allowed Tony Jones to account for all of our 18 points in the 18-14 victory.   We did have to hold on for dear life at the end and we can say a friendly referees whistle giving us 2 penalties in front of the post made Tony's kicking easier.

Thankfully there were no serious injuries although somehow Andy did manage to knock heads with the shortest member of their team splitting his head open.  Luckily one of the members of the lions claimed to be a surgeon, and said he had some man glue (that's what he said on the field) which would save him a trip to the hospital for stitches, after the game Andy came back from enemy territory with a smile saying he was a great doc.

Things to remember for Jersey Cup, we need to try and keep the ball in hand no kicking from the wings and centres, (ok Omar 2 of your 3 kicks were alright but the one to the center of the field to their fastest guy, remember it's not the 80's).  Also the Lions did a lot of talking to the referee causing them some penalties, we have to keep our mouths shut like we tried to do Sat.

Man of the match and captain for Jersey Cup:  Tony Jones
Golden Shorts: Mitch Miller
Laundry Boy: Ed Joyce

Undefeated Masters Win the Jersey Cup!

The Morris Masters finished the spring season undefeated, beating both Bayonne and OMEX to win the Jersey Cup Masters Division.

The BAM game was a 19 point shutout, with three tries and two conversions by the Masters. The first try was scored down the middle and early in the first half by Tony Jones with a pop kick to himself. The next score was in the second half by Neil Davies. The third try was by member in good standing, Phil Stumpf, who flew in from Chicago for the event. He scored in the weak corner, confusing the opposition with a flying glissade from the En premiere.

The OMEX game ended with the score 19 to 14. Tony Jones was able to duplicate his earlier exploit by pop kicking to himself and scoring once again. Tex blew everyone away with his fake and 70 meter run for a try from the scrum down. Some of the older masters grew winded just watching Tom. sprint downfield. The final try was scored by Jones, this time in the more conventional manner.

Omex was able to score twice on Morris in the second half, overloading our wing. This was soon remedied and the game ended with the Master's finishing the 2004 spring season undefeated and Jersey Cup champions. Special mention should go to Jack for making five tackles in as many seconds, Gamer for putting a brutal hit on Francis, Chappy for trying to catch the lineout with his penis and Mitch for his infamous behind the back pass (it would have worked too,  if only a Morris player was there to catch it). Quote of the tournament goes to Fatman: "What's the good of being stupid if you can't prove it?". Runner up was Andy, heard to shout from the maul: "MY FOOT, LEGGO OF MY FOOT! ALRIGHT I'LL GIVE YOU THE BALL!".
